For our firewalls we use the OpenBSD Packet Filter (PF). OpenBSD is known for it's security and reliability. With PF we build firewalls that perform as well -or even better-  as the expensive commercial products. Our firewalls have proven themselves already in various high traffic environments where they process millions of requests a day.

Features

This is a short list of features that our firewall setup support:

• Packet Filtering
  The selective passing or blocking of network traffic.
• Network Address Translation (NAT)
  Sharing of a single (public) IP-address. This technique makes it possible to supply a whole network of internet access, while only one IP-address is needed.
• Port forwarding
  System that access internet through NAT, are not accessible from the internet. Port forwarding makes it possible to "map" internal traffic to an inside server.
• Packet normalization
  Network packets that do not meet the standards are "scrubbed" so that they can't be misinterpreted at the final destination of the packet.
• Load Balancing
  - Incoming traffic can be shared amongst multiple servers.
  - Outgoing traffic can be shared amongst multiple data lines.
• Packet Queueing and Prioritization
  This techniques make it possible to assign bandwidth or priority to certain traffic.

Firewall Failover

On most networks, the firewall is a single point of failure. When the firewall goes down, the systems behind the firewall are not accessible either.

We can offer a redundant firewall solution, where two firewalls are placed in parallel (Master - Slave configuration).

When the Master firewall fails, the Slave will take over where it left off. And because the firewalls synchronize status data: No connection is lost and all existing connections are preserved.

Software patches or hardware upgrades can be done easily with this setup: One of the two firewalls can be put offline for maintainance without impacting the network.
